The most likely source of this error is that the mouse device listed in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, in the InputDevice section, doesn't exist. This will cause X to bail out. Check and see if it exists -- if it doesn't, you should be able to select another device using dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg. On my system, which uses kernel 2.6.14 and udev, the correct device is /dev/input/mice.
