Exactly the same situation in which I found myself! Way too confusing
for day to day use. And, then, some heretic people say that the command
line programs are inherently harder to use than those with menus & co.

So do I. In fact, the nice thing today is that you can purge dselect
from your systems without any harm (in the past, you couldn't do this
without breaking things).

If you really want a menu-driven program, at least try aptitude.
