Thanks to some poking around and help from Andrew Sackville-West, it
turns out some upgrade had removed menu-xdg. Reinstalling restored my
precious Debian menu in GNOME. Most likely it was a particular gnome
package upgrade that yanked stuff and didn't catch my attention. It
shows up as removed but configured:
$ dpkg -l menu-xdg
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Installed/Config-files/Unpacked/Failed-config/Half-installed
|/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err:
uppercase=bad)
||/ Name Version
Description
+++-===============================-===============================-==============================================================================
rc menu-xdg 0.2
freedesktop.org menu compliant window manager scripts
So, I went into aptitude and selected menu-xdg for installation, which
went through fine:
...
Selecting previously deselected package menu-xdg.
(Reading database ... 231863 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking menu-xdg (from .../archives/menu-xdg_0.2_all.deb) ...
Setting up menu-xdg (0.2) ...
...
Debian menu is back, presto. Hope that helps others, and thanks again
to Andrew.
Regards,
