mplayer never installs any startup icon, yet I downloaded the k-6
version which i believe
includes a gui. Never got mplayer running .

I have: a few years linux experience
           limited debian experience
           gnome desktop

What am I not doing? gary

1) Are you able to play sound in general or is the problem with realplayer/mplayer?

2) How did you install realplayer/mplayer?

3) If you do

realplay somefile.rm

on a shell then what happens? Is there any error? or do you not hear sound?

mplayer has no gui AFAIK. It is a command line player. If you need a gui, I think it is called gmplayer.
