Re: gnome and mime types
You more or less need Nautilus. Search the archives to see the
colourful variety of opinions on whether this is a Good Thing.
Using Nautilus, bring up the "preferences" for a .smil file, and
go to "Open With". There you can set up whatever you want.
The archives will tell you all about .local/share/applications and
update-desktop-database etc...
