usb issues in sarge: scanner, multicard

I'm having some issues with my usb system in my fresh sarge
installation, the scanner's are permission issues, multicard doesn't
even make the kernel blink. As root, xsane has no problems. I am using
a 2.6.x stock debian kernel, the one in sarge.
Here is some about my system:

uname -a
Linux hpd 2.6.8-2-686 #1 Thu May 19 17:53:30 JST 2005 i686 GNU/Linux

sane-find-scanner
found USB scanner (vendor=0x03f0 [Hewlett-Packard], product=0x0401 [HP ScanJet 5200C]) at libusb:002:002

ls /etc/hotplug/usb
kino-jogshuttle kino.usermap libgphoto2 libgphoto2.usermap
(no reference to scanners)

With reference to my multicard, when I connect it, dmesg and
/var/log/kern.log don't reflect it.

Help is appreciated.
