Where did you copy the file to? You need to copy it to
/path/to/kernel-source/.config and then run make oldconfig. You also
need to build an initrd for the kernel (e.g. make-kpkg clean; make-kpkg
--initrd --revision 1.0 -r fakeroot kernel_image)
