Then can you try a PCI modem instead? This is a critical troubleshooting step.
Possibly off-topic, but does a custom kernel use the initrd line in
lilo.conf? (Feel free to introduce a new topic in answer or discussion!)
The only reason I know of for ramdisk support in a custom kernel, or module
support for that matter, would be for making a rescue disk or a system that
boots and runs from a CD.
