...mmmmmmmmm....had some time ago some problem that looks like an 
equivalent of yours.  i de-installed the mplayer from nerim.net, got rid 
of all mplayer-files. after that i compiled the mplayer-sourcecode from 
the hungarian mplayer site *after* i installed the plugins in 
/usr/lib/win32 (if i remember well). i started compiling mplayer with:  
$  ./configure --enable-gui --disable-rtc

after having completed the installation of the other,'hungarian' mplayer 
on my machine all troubles were gone.

maybe a suggestion for you??
