Are their any local linux user groups (LUGs) where you live. They
should only be too pleased to help you with your problems.

A re-install should not (never?) be necessary, although the learning
experience is helpful.

I suggest also as root (you are connected to net? -- if no then when
connected to net) issue the following commands:

1. apt-get install debian-doc debian-reference

 
2. apt-get install wget bzip2

Then issue the following command as a normal user which will
download a nice linux course, so be in your home directory:

wget -O - http://rute.2038bug.com/rute.html.tar.bz2 | tar -xvvjf -

Good luck, it is difficult at first, gets a bit easier, then gets harder
again when you realise you can't learn it all. Concentrate on the tools
of the trade - nethack is a good start :-)
