Thanks, Jacob!  I've emailed my friend the requisite stuff; we'll see
what he says.

Oddly enough, I just created a hotmail account and mailed something to
it, and the message came through just fine.  So maybe something else
is going on with my friend's account.  I wonder if she has some
super-tight setting that the default settings don't have.
