Thank you. The issue appears to be resovled via a different path, but that may very will be the root problem. I found an interesting posting about configuring things to work more directly through alsa (http://phaeronix.net/asoundrc). I did that, which entailed setting its configuration to specify the 48000 frequency. I also added -as 2 to the default_options in /etc/esound/esd.conf per a bug report I found on Rhythmbox (doesn't work inside gnome), which is permitting many more programs to work. Everything appears to be working ok now, although I'm a little confused as the alsa posting seems to imply that the -as 2 on esd should not be necessary for simultaneous use by gnome and other apps. But everything seems to be working well enough at the moment. If it starts failing again, I'll try putting the frequency directly in esd.conf as well.
