installing a single package

I'm trying to install a single xfree*.deb package I downloaded and put into my /home/dwolover directory.  I've tried the "apt-get install /home/dwolover/xfree*.deb" command but it seems to be checking the package directories and ignores the single package I identify in the command.  Any help on what I'm doing wrong would be appreciated.
