Try installing the foomatic packages, they include printer definition files.
What I use for configuring printers is gnome-cups-manager. It's not completely
stable, but it usually works. I usually later fine-tune using the web interface
(http://localhost:631/), the main problem I have is with setting up the
printer's name properly.
I think kde has a similar tool, but I'm not sure.
