Well, good news and bad news. Which one first ? :)

Good: I guess serial comm is aok ... found a program called gpsman 
(there is a debian package) and it is capable of receiving the data from 
the GPS !!! :) So the serial should be aok and the unit sends data.

Bad: neither minicom nor gpsd seem to care :(

Will keep on troubleshooting on the gpsd list.
