i think that it should read /etc/modutils/alsa
or /etc/modutils/alsa-base.

but i wouldnt futz with that stuff manually. get the alsa modules
corresponding to your kernel.

i would suggest upgrading to a 2.6 kernel, and of course compiling it
yourself. :)

and get the alsa-base package, then run
# alsaconf
then
$ alsamixer
