Newest is 2.0 Beta, but it takes a bit of work to get it integrated
into Debian. Thats why there is an OO debian team that does just
that.

WT

2.0 beta is not too much work
tar xfvz the downloaded tar.gz file into something like /foo/foo/RPMS
do as # alien -d *.rpm after having done cd /foo/foo/RPMS
and as # dpkg -i --force-overwrite *.deb
at last as # chmod 555 /opt/openoffice.org.1.9.xx/program/soffice
works reasonably. allthough i doubt it is a beta. seems more an alpha.

try it out for yourself

There are .deb distributions here:

ftp://ftp.linux.cz/pub/localization/OpenOffice.org/devel/680/

Just download the appropriate tar file and untar it to get the
packages out of it. These are not official packages an will
stall into /opt (as the rpms do). The milestones are available
usually within a few hours of being tagged.

I have found the new version (I am using m86) to be fairly stable
so far. I have only had a few minor problems, but I will stick
with it because of the better support for MS formats (a necessary
evil for school).
