That's not what the error message says.

Normally, how does a non-privileged user access these files?

# ls -o /var/log/X*
-rw-r--r--  60852 2005-02-02 13:07 /var/log/XFree86.0.log
-rw-r--r--  60852 2005-02-02 12:27 /var/log/XFree86.0.log.old
