Gee, so what you ACTUALLY meant through all of this nonsense was that you
COULD log in, but then you'd get dumped back to the login dialog again.
You could have just said that, you know.  I know, I know... it's too much
trouble to describe the actual problem.

You're logging in, XDM is looking for the session file, it's not finding
one, it's terminating the X session (since there's nothing to hold it up),
and you're back at the login dialog again.  Very simple.

Create your ~/.xsession file, put in it what X clients you want running.
Now everything works.

Of course, now you're going to tell everyone you want to use KDE, which
begs the question of why you removed KDM, rather than fixing it.
