Installing 'xserver-xfree86' here, and allowing dexconf to handle
such questions would have been far more advisable.

No, that's the whole point. 'x-windw#ow-system' is a meta package to
provide the necessary core X utils such as twm, Xnest, xterm, etc.
Then you install your window manager ontop of that (should you want
to use something other than twm).
