Right, I don't have CONFIG_FB set in the new kernel.  I started with it
set, but my video didn't work.  I'll try again as I didn't take very
good notes about that problem.

No, I don't have two mouse sections in my XF86Config-4 file.  I think I
do have kernel mouse emulation of some sort -- I think I remember that
in the kernel config.  I'm using "/dev/psaux" only.
