xmodmap automatically (.xsession or .xinitrc does not work)

Hello

I changed from suse to Debian, via Knoppix. To my surprise
putting
xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap
in the .xinitrc or .xsession file
had no effect that is I have to execute this command every time I log
in. 

Is there any solution?
