Well, all SMB does is handle network file systems and network
printers. Both were problems solved earlier and better by lpr and
nfs. See also: NetBOLLUX.

That's exactly what hosts.equiv and identd are for. You set your
local network in hosts.equiv; and anything in hosts.equiv is assumed
to respond with a valid, authenticated user. Keep this in mind,
because identd spoofing will leave you totally open from all hosts in
/etc/hosts.equiv.
