Sam, if you have the disk space, you could set up a second installation
mirroring the first (you don't have to install twice of course, just copy
the current one to the new one and set up your boot loader to multi-boot).
That gives you the opportunity to use the new installation as a sandbox,
and try things out before implementing them on your "live" system.
