out of memory

My box is a Debian Sid 2.4.21-5-686 full update. I have 1 GB of ram and another gb of swap. There's a lot of free disk space.
I get lots of out of memory.
Part of the dmesg:
...
GRE over IPv4 tunneling driver
IPv4 over IPv4 tunneling driver
ip_conntrack version 2.1 (8191 buckets, 65528 max) - 292 bytes per conntrack
ip_tables: (C) 2000-2002 Netfilter core team
IA-32 Microcode Update Driver: v1.11 <tigran@veritas.com>
eth0: Setting 100mbps full-duplex based on auto-negotiated partner ability 41e1. eth1: Setting 100mbps full-duplex based on auto-negotiated partner ability 41e1. eth2: Setting 100mbps full-duplex based on auto-negotiated partner ability 45e1.
Out of Memory: Killed process 372 (chown).
...

There's more examples like untar a kernel, i check in another term, all the ram and swap are gone, then the message out of memory (and dont got the untar finished). Another example is updating the packages, there's a problem width the cron package (or not) instead of kill the cron process all the memory is gone!?
But i can run X and check my mail, etc.

What is happen?
I have this problem since the first upgrade this month.

Tanks in advance.
