USB mouse problems

I've got a new laptop I'm trying to install Debian testing on. It will be
used in a dock a great deal of the time. It's got a built in PS/2 mouse
workalike, and a USB port for an external mouse.

I've booted Knoppix on it, and runing like thta, I can use the USB mouse in
X. I've copied over the Xf86 config created by Knoppix, but I can't use the
USB mouse whn I boot from the Debian instance. I've rebuilt a new 2.4.20
kernel using the config file from Koppix.

Here is what lsmod has to say:

I've als installed hotplug, but it does nto seem to be working. here is
what I get when I run it manualy:

brown2:~# /sbin/hotplug
/sbin/hotplug: line 27: hotplug.functions: No such file or directory
/sbin/hotplug: line 35: debug_mesg: command not found
Usage: /sbin/hotplug AgentName [AgentArguments]
AgentName values on this system: (*)
