Have you opened a mixer (ALSA's own mixers are alsamixer for 'graphical' interface, and amixer for strictly command-line) and made sure your output channels are unmuted and turned up to a reasonable volume? The ALSA installation process appears (for some reason?) to leave these channels set to zero and/or muted.
