Uh, have you read through the debian-security archives?  The security
team did a survey asking how long people intended to continue using
potato a couple of months ago, which seems to be more or less what
you're talking about.

And this was what they came up with, basically.  I think they said they
would support potato up until July 2003, which is a year from the
release of woody.
