browsing through the latest source fetched with
  apt-get source mount
let me to the following assumption according to information found in
umount.c, line 567ff:
  - the entries in /etc/mtab are not correctly set by mount since
    a) my /etc/fstab contains the 'user' option
    b) comment on line 575 (umount.c) says:
/* A convenient side effect is that the user who mounted
          is visible in mtab. */
    c) if the option 'users' was specified in /etc/fstab, any user
       could umount the mounted point.
    c) my /etc/mtab does not contain any 'user=' entry as it is
searched for if 'user' was specified in /etc/fstab
=> the entries in /etc/mtab (which is a link to /proc/mounts).

Has anyone experienced the same problem with mount/umount? I am
running Linux 2.4.20, umount: mount-2.11z, mount: mount-2.11z on a
Debian sid system.

Thanks for any hint!

wbr,
Lukas
