Learned about it after the fact.  I am using KDM.  Normally everything is 
fine so KDM is not a problem.

I have been known to jack monitor cables around between boxes.  I didn't do 
it today but I did do it recently and had to reboot when the screen blanked 
out and I couldn't telnet in.  

Maybe the problem is in the card.  It's an el-cheapo Trident Cyberblade or 
something.  It was recognised when I installed.  I'll widen my scope to 
include watching for vidoe problems.  

To learn more about XFree86 configuration should I stay with the web or move 
on to dead-trees?
