RE: make menuconfig
There was only the one package (partimage) that depended on the upversioned
libc6, so I am already in the first state. I have a knowledge gap that
wasn't solved by dpkg --help, which is the syntax for using two commands:
dpkg -i --force-overwrite --force-depends-version ? or how?

Downgrade everything that depends on the newer libc6, except for
libdb1-compat. Downgrade libc6 to the version from stable, using dpkg
with the --force-overwrite and I think --force-depends-version flags.
(Downgrades aren't really supported, as you might gather ...)
