Because it is moderately easier to read. People (at least from what
I've seen) tend to add a little extra space when writing by hand after
a sentance, anyway, so it transferred over to typing.
In reality, I've demonstrated actual double-spacing above. An extra space
after the period is just considered polite, as is making an honest
attempt at accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar.
