how to switch from DES to md5?

I'm working my way through the "securing Debian HOWTO" and I'd like to switch my system from regular DES passwords to MD5 as suggested. Unfortunately, the howto doesn't seem to have any cookbook guidelines on how to do this safely. I tried searching on the web and on various debain mailing lists but I was unable to find good statement on how this is done.

Is there an easy way to reinvoke the setup process that normally configures this so I can select MD5 passwords? Or do I have to do this manually. And if it can only be done manually, does anybody have a pointer to a writeup of what needs to be done, or can provide a brief description?

It looks like I would want to change some pam configuration files, but I see similar lines in login, passwd and ssh and I'm not clear on what their relationship is. Also, what do I do with the passwords on existing accounts?

Thanks for any help.
