What kernel version are you using? (use "uname -r" to find out). I
think that SB16 is an ISA card, so you have to turn on ISA PNP. You can
do it using ISAPNP (install the "sndconfig" package). Or you can update
to the 2.4.18 kernel which has true ISAPNP capabilities. (way easier to
configure) I had the same problem with a SB32 card. Good luck!!

So, does that device file exist? It's possible that /dev/dsp(0)
has not been created. I don't know how to create the individual
sound-related device files, off-hand. I use the script that
comes with the ALSA drivers source called 'snddevices.in' which
creates all the device files and links needed for sound.
Also, please set your email editor to wrap to around 72 characters
width.
