This might be a sid/woody thing but after gdm dies about 5 times in a short
period of time it stops trying to load it, so you get the opportunity to
reconfigure X.
If you have enough time in a console window you can always do an
"/etc/init.d/gdm stop", same goes for xdm and probably kdm too.
