Can't locate module char-major-4

Hi,

Looking through the syslog I kept seeing:

> Feb 23 11:43:39 annabell modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
char-major-4

repeating continually.  So after having a look about I though I would try

modprobe -r char-major-4    <------ don't suppose I need it if it can't be
found anyway

I now get the following continually

>Feb 23 11:43:39 annabell modprobe: Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent
than 
  /lib/modules/2.2.20/modules.dep

any ideas on how I clean this up ???
