I'm grateful to all who have replied; it's a relief to find I'm not the
only sufferer! However, I'm no nearer to understanding what is going on.
In all cases the lockups have occurred when I've been online,
downloading stuff, though not necessarily large files. At present I'm
wondering if there could be an interaction with the Genome-at-home
program, which attempts to send stuff to its host at intervals. I shall
try turning it off to see if that helps.
