Check your /etc/X11/XF86Config  ( at the beginning )
   Fonts 
	...
	FontPath   "unix/:-1"

if you have it, you probably need to be running xfs ( x fontserver )
or
(quickie test) comment it out and test to see if works...

"X -probeonly" will tell you what else you might need to fix
