sorry but i'm a total linux newbie.

i didn't understand your reply enough.

are you saying that when the installation program prompts me to insert a
cdrom, i should do an alt-Fx, and type those commands in (dd if=/dev/cdrom
of=/dev/hda5, etc. )? or do these belong to some script somewhere?

please also explain about making hda5 active, as you state below.

kindly explain a little more.
