I use WindowMaker. The wmppp app has a checkbox to connect/disconnect, and a green/red/yellow status light to indicate network status, as well as traffic and speed indicators. It sits on the WindowMaker Dock or Clip. I set this up for my parents' use. http://web.cs.mun.ca/~gstarkes/wmaker/dockapps/net.html Screenshots of WindowMaker desktop (wmifs, the 'ETH-0' tile) is similar to wmppp. I have a separate box that handles dialup connections: http://kmself.home.netcom.com/Images/Desktop/ http://kmself.home.netcom.com/Images/Desktop/desktop-8.png GNOME probably has its own apps, though I don't use it.
