Ctrl-Alt-F1 (or F2 .. F6), then
zless /usr/share/doc/xfree86-common/FAQ.gz <enter>, then
look for: *) How do I stop xdm from starting at boot?

Ctrl-Alt-F1 (or F2 .. F6),
     Alt-F7 (without Ctrl, as far as I remember)
            to take you back to the X display manager.
