Before resorting to rebooting, try Ctl-Alt-Backspace in the
graphics (black) window.  The X-server responds to this by
shutting itself down, restoring you to the virtual console
where you entered startx.  It is best not to use xdm to
bypass command line screens until you have X reliably
configured, BTW.
