Well, a popular DTD (document type declaration, i believe: essentially
an instance of the sgml language) of the sgml is DocBook (started by
O'Reilly and others in early 90's), which at one point was used by the
linuxdoc.org project.
You can find more info (including free online copy of an O'reilly book on
