(Not quite answering your question, but:) Often I see people asking
this question while they are unaware that there exists a perfectly
integrated Debian package just with the software they are trying to
install -- as in this case: there *is* a ready-made postfix Debian
package.

So before installing a program from sources, you should try:

    $ apt-cache search <program name>

and:
 
    $ apt-cache show <program name>

Never mind if you already knew that.
