Re: inn2: innd won't start
I have an answer, just for the record and anyone else who runs into this:

Not silent at all! It turns out, for starters, that I was only looking at
the news logs and of course there was nothing there because news hadn't run
yet. I should have looked at syslog, which informed me about a missing
history file. It turns out that the (excellent) INN FAQ
(http://blank.org/innfaq) quickly directs one to running the 'makehistory'
command to solve this. It's a little tricky in that I did not seem to run
into the exact same filenames that are shown in the example in 'man
makehistory' but in essence, apparently, the trick is to make anything that
looks like 'history.n.whutever' look like 'history.whutever'.
At least that's what I've learned so far...
I dunno; should some of this get into the readme.Debian?
