vi, Internet and display depth ...

Hi !

I've got 3 questions:

1) I've worked with vi fine, until I installed elvis too. ( I'm only
assuming this has to do with installing elvis ... ) But now, vi doesn't
show the text of the file in an xterm, only on a console. After exiting
from vi (in an xterm), I have to type "reset" to see any text at all again!

Why this ?

2) I'm trying to connect to the Internet from home through my university.
I've set up ppp and chat. Using minicom to dialup and connecting via ppp
works fine, but when I automate it and look at "tail -f /var/log/messages",
it says
"Cannot determine Ethernet address for proxy ARP".

What does that mean ?

3) I'm having trouble using programs like Netscape 4.04 and xearth-1.0
because of display depth 4. It's unsupported.
( I've attached my "xdpyinfo" ouput ).

What now ?

( BTW, the autmating script "ppp.on" also uses "fix-cua" which I don't have
either. What is it and do I really need it ? Where do I get it ? -- I've
just deleted this line "fix-cua $DEVICE" and it seems to work fine ... )

THANKS A LOT for all your help in advance, Helmut
