booting Debian from CD or harddisk

Hello!

I'm trying to boot Debian directly from CD (mitsumi) or harddisk (IDE) using

loadlin linux root=/dev/ram initrd=root.bin

from PC DOS 7 everything works fine, but after

Uncompressing Linux...

ran out of input data

My test system has 8 MB of RAM

where should I search the error. I've tried different kernels and
root-Images from the disks-i386 directory (4.4.97 and 20.05.97, but
not the actual one from 06.06.)

Any Ideas?

Thanks
     Christian
