Si funciona startx, no tiene nada que ver con los módulos ni con la 
configuración de X. 
¿Probaste con /etc/init.d/kdm start? (o gdm o xdm)
Probá instalar otro gestor de acceso, por ejemplo, si usas gdm, instalá xdm. 
Luego con dpkg-reconfigure gdm selecciona que querés usar xdm.
