justamente por eso el programa.
915resolution -h
creo para hacerlo permanente tenías que cambiarlo
en /etc/default/915resolution.

Aún así, muchos tienen el hardware casi idéntico, muchos dell por ejemplo se parecen bastante..
Compilar el kernel es una opción bastante buena, además en los últimas
versiones siempre dan mayor soporte.
