yo uso blackbox y mi .xinitrc es el siguiente:
$ cat .xinitrc
qiv -z Biohazard.jpg &
bbkeys -i -w &
bbpager -w &
rox &
numlockx &
sleep 1 && gkrellm -w &
aterm -tr -trsb -bg black -tint cyan -fg white -sl 500 -title
Ostots -geometry 140x30 & hotkeys -Z &
exec blackbox
qiv se encarga de ponerme el fondo... espero q te aclare
algo...
